Our Cruise

Last November we went with some friends on a Caribbeans Cruise, it was a BLAST!

Our ship was Royal Caribbean's Freedom of the Seas. It was a very nice ship with a wonderful staff who took such good care of us. Lots of fun was to be had on the FlowRider surf simulator, rock climbing wall, ice-skating rink, 3D dreamworks theater, Royal Promenade shopping, cantilevered whirlpools, mini golf course, and the H2O Zone water park, not to mention the fabulous eating options.

The weather was not the best and we had to forgo our first stop, which was Cococay Bahamas, but there was so much to do on the ship that we didn't mind one bit.
So, our next stop was St. Thomas, the weather was kind of cloudy but we hit the beach anyway and did some snorkeling.

Just had to tryout the macro function on the new pocket camera:)

Because of the cool weather we discovered something new "sand fleas" and yes, they bite. So, about 3 days later we were covered with little red itchy dots.

Our last and favorite stop was St Maarten, which we thought we might have to stay and take up residence on a count of we cut it really close getting back on the ship. They have some traffic issues, and island time is different than ship time.

Julie and I went on an amazing private horseback ride that ended up in the ocean. It was soooo fun!

Then we took some rhino boats and drove along the coast. This is a must do if you ever go to St Maarten. It was soo cool, we drove through a ship graveyard, and stopped for some snorkeling along the way, I drove the boat on the way back and missed the clothing optional beach, but I'm told there were some interesting sites I missed:) They recommended not taking our cameras for this, but I really wished I had!

This was formal night, which I have to admit was more fun than I thought, I don't like to dress up:)

The guy on the left had a tie on but it came off quick after we left the dining room- pilots are such rebels!

After eating a fabulous dinner in the dining room, we would then change our clothes and hit Johnny Rockets for fries, Sundaes and shakes....because we could. I don't think I ever had a chance to get hungry, we just ate and ate and ate!

The upper deck activities were fun, we felt like we had to try everything at least once!

This is all of the groups luggage, but this being our first cruise, most of it's ours, ya know... cause we had to bring everything.

This was one of my favorite parts. I have never been away from these guys for very long and I was soooo excited to see them!!!!!!

Now this was by far the funnest vacation we have ever taken, but there is a dark side, I happen to be one of those extremely rare cases where my land legs never returned. It has been two months and I still constantly rock like I'm on a ship. Mal de debarquement is the name of the "condition" and I'm not gonna lie, It has been pretty miserable and life changing. If I had known that this would have happened I definitely would have passed on the cruise but part of me is glad I didn't know because I will always have the fun memories with my dear friends.

The fall

This has been our craziest fall yet. We've kinda laid low the last couple of years but thought that since Kate is two now we could handle a little more on our plate. HA! So our fall was filled with ballet twice a week, soccer 4xs a week, violin 2-3xs a week, tumbling once a week and piano 2x a week, with the occasional choir concert/recital...humm no wonder i didn't have time to blog and it flew by so fast.

Last spring Bree tried out for LADY MADRIGALS at school, she loves it. They are a very impressive group and we just love the choir director. He is so fun, but also really knows is stuff.

Bree attended a murder mystery party and they all had to dress up in formals. (thank heavens for cheap ROSS dresses)

Kate's Birthday

Oh how the last two years have flown! How did this happen? We now offically are counting her age in years instead of months. (sniff sniff) Two is a fun time.

Summer Goals

This summer we all made the goal to run the "Raspberry run 5k" at Bear Lake. So we printed out the "couch to 5k" training program and hit the pavement. The kids did great! Carter bless his heart tried his best, but half way through training decided to change his goal, he chose to read his first "Diary of a Wimpy Kid book" instead. He still trained with us but he decided maybe next year on the race. (We were kinda worried about losing him in the mass of runners anyway so we didn't push it) He finished his book 3 days after school started. Yay!!

Saydi ended up running two 5k races. (beating her mother in the pioneer day race)

We found out two weeks before the Raspberry Run that the auditions for the "Gifted Music School" were that same morning, so Bree and I had to drop out of the Race. Abby, Saydi and Dave made it and Abby ended up taking first place in her age group. Sorry no pictures:( Bree ended up with a full scholarship to GMS, so I'm glad we stayed home for that.

I am so proud of the kids for reaching their goals. They woke up early all summer and proved they could do "hard things". They were so encouraging to each other and wanted each other to succeed! What a great summer!

Bear Lake Highlights

Ya, so the only thing I have a harder time with than journaling is picture organization. And some how all my pictures from this summer have been completely unorganized. As if blogging wasn't hard enough, it now takes twice as long to find the pictures, so I have been putting it off. Maybe now that the kids are back to school I can get better organized. Ya right! Well, it's a nice thought anyway.

Because the Lake came up so high this year there were a ton of frogs and snakes on the beach. No sand for sand castles, but lots of swampy muck and the creatures that go with it.

And of course the boat rides never disappoint, even though the gas pump went out on this one about a half hour after I took this picture. So we had to tow it back to the cabin, with my kids and my parents on it, but it still made an exciting boat trip. Boy are we happy that Grandpa has two boats:)
And oh boy, we all love the old trusty tractor that gets the boats in and out.

And it seems like every Sunday the lake is always perfectly smooth for skiing, tempting everyone to jump in........but, we end up at our Bear Lake ward instead. And I just have to say how much we appreciate this ward. Every summer, on the big holidays like July 4th, 24th, & raspberry days, they put on two Sacrament meetings. (they pack the chapel and the gym both times) And these dear people are so gracious to double or quadruple their primary classes just to accommodate all of us visitors.

But my favorite thing is that I get all these people all to myself.

Bear Lake is our favorite family hang out! I love that my parents have given us this gift!!!!

Last Saturday I took the girls to the Fine Arts Museum, what a perfect day! We had such a great time and a little culture never hurt anyone. I have to admit I didn't have much "art appreciation" at their age, but now I love museums!

End of the school year stuff. Gosh, every year goes by faster and faster.

We ended two successful soccer seasons. Abby found out she loves soccer and Carter.... well he found out what soccer was a least:)

Dave's Release

So, a few weeks ago our beloved Bishop was called to be our new Stake President. Oh how we have loved him as our Bishop! But this being the case, we knew that Dave's 4 1/2 years as 2nd counselor was coming to an end. What a privilege this has been for our family, YES I said privilege! Sacrifice is what I would usually associate with these callings, but the love and service that has been shown to our family far exceeds any sacrifice we have made. He has loved being in the bishopric and getting to know the wonderful, kind, generous and loving people in our ward. He will miss it I know, BUT there are some things we are looking forward to.....like sitting with Dad during Sacrament meeting, and snuggling with dad on the couch for those after church naps.

The new Bishopric is so wonderful and we are excited for them. Change is good!!!!

Yes, it gets a little crazy in the car! Finally at the Hotel!!! She is almost never happy in her car seat, so I had to take a picture when she was!

I'm not a huge Chuck-A-Rama fan, but that fact that the other six members of the family are happy, I'll go anywhere.

So..... the girls spent some quality time at Olive Garden.

We all went for Ice Cream at Iceberg.

We found a great park on the way out of town.

We are so bummed it's over and more bummed that we didn't get to visited our dear friends. We will definitely be coming back!!!!!

Spring Cleaning

I love Spring and yes.... I like to clean.( I'm sure my mother isn't buying that.) This year we are doing it a bit different. I usually do my spring cleaning over spring break, all myself, and it takes me about a week and a half. This year I bribed the kids into helping...... and I made an easy 1 month schedule. It is going pretty good, I think I may do this every year.
So what am I bribing them with???? A shopping spree in St George, which I am having to do a lot of substitute teaching for so I can afford that bribe.

I guess I have a little obsession with charts, lists and signs. My kids tend to roll their eyes every time I introduce a new one, but I have found it's the best way to get things done around here. Some work better than others and many get abandoned, but I sure love to make them:)

I got the "family laws" idea from my relatives that write parenting books. We've had them for a few years now but we still need reminding every now and then.

My kids do better when they can check something off. We use a lot of paper, but it's worth it.

The house cleaning "spread sheet" yes, Dave got involved in this one. I think we overwhelmed the kids with it, it's not going very well.

Zones are my favorite and seemed to work better.

Above it all I have my "Simplify" sign to remind me not to get too carried away!

Fiddler on the Roof

Bree is in the Musical "Fiddler on the Roof" at her school. She didn't plan on this but they needed a jr. high fiddler and I guess she fit the part. We didn't realize what a time commitment this would be and have learned a lot about what it takes to be in a musical. She hasn't had much time for anything else (like-violin graduation, solo and ensemble and ASTA) and it will be a miracle if she can keep her grades up this term, but she is having a BLAST and has made a lot of new friends! She is loving it, but is exhausted!!!Watching her the last few weeks has made me appreciate my average childhood. I couldn't have handled half of what she does.

I bought this little violin when Bree first started. The other kids didn't seem to care much for it, but Kate LOVES it. She shakes with excitement when we get it out and cries for 10 minutes when we put it away. I hope she follows in her big sister's footprints with that one.

Abby's Birthday Part 2

Well, we tried! None of us were feeling well and 4 of us ended up with the flu. (even though we had flu shots) I didn't feel like making a cake, so I bought one at last minute. Abby wouldn't touch it, she said it made her nauseous! Kate was the only one feeling good and she was ready to eat the whole cake herself.

I don't know where I'd be without my Abby. She is so important to this household and usually my right hand girl. It's like having a personal assistant when she's around. She anticipates what I need before I do. And what a natural with Kate, I think she is the only kid around here that changes diapers, and doesn't mind it.

She is sharp as a tack, and some how came with book smarts and common sense. She is also funny as can be and really gets us laughing. Her loves are playing the piano and soccer, her challange is trying to learn Spanish to catch up with the rest of her class who started 3 years ahead of her. I am so proud of her!

Gift giving with the kids-

We have so many fabulous neighbors that we do a fundraiser instead of neighbor gifts, but we bend a little and every kid gets to pick one family to give something to.

Instead of a gingerbread house the kids made a gingerbread manger scene. It looks simple but it took all day!

After Christmas we took a tour through the LDS humanitarian center. It was a great way end the holiday. The kids even used part of their Christmas money and put together hygiene kits.

Man the holidays flew by fast this year, but we sure had some fun times.

Every year my aunt and uncle cut down a 20 foot tree and decorate it. What a feat!!!! We love going to their house for our annual family Christmas party! Our other annual Christmas party tradition with the neighbors, boy do they know how to through a party. Games and treats galore!

Wow, officially a teenager! She loves life and is doing way more than I did at 13. She has so many " likes".....hanging with friends, singing, playing the piano and of coarse the violin, she likes to run and play volleyball. She loves her school newspaper class and right now wants to go into journalism. So far, she's a 4.0 student (but we've only had one quarter:)) What a fun kid to watch grow up!She started her B-day going out to breakfast with a friend, followed by the mall with more friends, then her grandma took her on a shopping spree to the gateway, next was cheesecake with the fam and a late night movie with another friend. She really packed it in.

I can't believe it's been 11 years. I feel like the luckiest person in the world to be this girl's mother! She is the funnest kid to have around. My favorite thing about Saydi is that she always thinks about others before herself. Even today, when I took her to breakfast and asked her where she wanted to go, she said "wherever is the least expensive". And then she ended up bringing half of her food home to share with her siblings. Then when we went to Walmart to pick out a class treat, she decided on card games because someone in her class has a peanut allergy (and because Abby was looking for games to take to school today for her "game day".)She is constantly thinking of others.

What a gift! She loves doing hair! (I haven't had to do hers for years now) she LOVES GYMNASTICS AND CHEERLEADING and sometimes loves playing the piano.

Yes, this was nearly a month ago. I can't seem to get ahead enough to journal (blog). Carter had a fun Birthday. I can't believe he is 6. Some highlights were..... a Lego Creationary game, and a Star Wars Lego Wii game. Grandpa and Grandma joined us and so did the Hugies.

His sisters decorated for the party.
He just wanted cupcakes. (yea) I can't make cakes very well!

these (below) are the carmeled apples we made at the neighbors- who ended up with 180 neighbors coming over to make carmeled apples.You don't have to spend a lot on Halloween. I spent all of 2 dollars this year!Kate likes to hand out candy more than trick-or-treating. Happy October!

Indian Summer

We had the BEST weekend and I'm posting a lot of pictures because I don't want to forget a single minute of it.

The weather has been so fabulous, so we decided t0 watch Conference at Bear Lake. We even took the kids out of school Friday and spent the day at the beach. Now, I have been to Bear Lake more times in my life than I can count, but never have I spent October 1st on the Beach. We were in HEAVEN! I think that was the best day we've seen all summer. No, I KNOW that was the best day we've seen in years. It was warm, the lake was glass ALL DAY LONG (that never happens) and we were the only boat on the lake (at least that we could see). The beach was full of sandbars and SAND, we haven't had very much lately. All in all it was the perfect day!

The girls were giving Daddy a spa foot treatment.

We haven't seen this much sand in a while.

This is my 66 year old, cancer and open-heart-surgery surviving, mother.

She beats us all.

My parents remodeled the front of the cabin this year.I don't know why but this kid LOVES Bear Lake dirt!!!!

We tried out the Garden City Pool with our neighbors.

Kate is one year old. I can't believe how fast that year went.Since we were trying to get ready for a Bear Lake trip, I put the girls in charge of the decorations.
They did AWESOME!
(they think she is going to be the first girl in the NFL)

She loves football!

I know, whoppers on a one-year-old's cake, probably not a very good idea-choking hazard.

First Day of School 2010

Bree started Jr. High......I cried! She had a fabulous first day and loved it. I'm so happy she had such a positive first day..... but I still cried!

Saydi started 5th grade.....I cried. She has a wonderful teacher! Abby started her first day of 3rd grade in a completely Spanish speaking class (she was the only student who hasn't had previous Spanish) .....I cried a lot! She came home with a happy face..... but we cried together later. ( I am so proud of her). Carter went to his first day of Spanish Immersion kindergarten......I cried again. He had a great day but can't understand why his mommy cried so much today.

This has been the HARDEST first day of school ever for me. I am going to miss them so much, but I am so excited for all the great experiences they will have this year!

Changes

O.K. so the biggest change is that we have joined the rest of the world in giving up our precious Saturdays for SOCCER!!!! We have been anti-soccer for years but this kid finally wore us down. Dave even got volunteered to be her assistant coach:-)
So- we haven't done anything around the house in a long time. And being on that "recession budget" has made it hard to do anything. Dave has been working 3 jobs on top of being a Dad of 5 and being in the bishopric. He used to be pretty handy to have around, now he is never around. But this last weekend I cornered him and got him to finish some long over due projects!

This is Abby's room that he started as a birthday present to me, this room was all lavender (not my favorite) and Abby wanted a change.

So he painted it pink! (better, but not quite)

Next he added an awesome wainscot! (Love IT!)

But the PINK just wasn't doing it for me!

So I painted it a light green (that looks yellow in this picture)

HAPPY BIRTHDAY TO ME!

Oh yeah- Abby loves it too!

Next I (we) have always wanted a headboard for Bree's bed but couldn't find one in my less than $50 price range- So Dave made me one-in like an hour- for $35 -YEAH!!!

Bree's room is almost finished!

And the Lego table that keeps the Lego's from falling on to the floor in the playroom. FINALLY! He made that for FREE- Yes, I said free! We had the wood left over from finishing the basement, he just needed the time to pound it together!

Carter Loves it, but thinks we need MORE LEGOS.

The play room is now complete (for now) -ha ha just kidding honey!

Even though we missed a few things and are a little backed up with everything else, it's so worth it to get these projects DONE!

So we are trynig to fix up Bree's room before she starts Jr. High ahhhh- being on the recession budget I decided to take Bree to the park and take some pictures myself. (btw...I just pretend to know how to take pictures I really don't know what I'm doing) Her room and needed some pics for the wall.

And if it looks like I'm bragging.... maybe I am. I am the least photogenic person in the world. So where does my daughter get it?

Someday..... I would love to get a real camera and take some photography classes, but until then I'll just pretend like I know what I'm doing.

14 years ago today, I married the perfect man (for me anyway). I still can't believe how I lucked out. We met and married in 6 months-not at all the way I thought it would happen. But he is truly my best friend and I can't imagine going through this crazy life without him.

We had a really short (cheap) honeymoon, we always thought we'd make it up on one of our anniversaries, but here we are at 14 and all we could fit in was a quick lunch during nap time. HAPPY ANNIVERSARY HONEY I LOVE YOU!

Somebody Call 911

So the Police just called and asked if I needed assistance's . I thought, that's weird, "No we are just fine". "Okay then we will cancel the officer that is en route to your house."........ I guess Kate managed to dial 911 in the two seconds she had when she grabbed the phone. I didn't even look at what she dialed I just hung it up. How does this happen???????

We just got back from a fun four days at Bear Lake! The weather was not the best but we still managed to have some fun!!

Swimming Lessons

Ok- so how lucky am I? My neighbor taught the lessons and the pool was just a few houses down the street. So nice! My dear friend is an awesome swim teacher, I can't believe the things they learn in that 2 week session.

So for our June activity (My parent's Christmas present) we went to Boondocks.

Way Fun!!!! Race Cars, bumper boats
Mini golf and my personal favorite Laser Tag!!!!!

I have to admit golfing with little ones can be tedious :-)

Kate loved the Merry-go round.

It was hot, so we went on the bumper boats to cool us down.

Being the die-hards that we are, we stayed there for 13 hours!!!

Bear Lake

So I took the kids to the cabin the first week out of school. (mostly to give Dave a break- he has been swamped) Yes, the cold one-- It was freezing!!!! The beach isn't as fun when it's cold!!!!!!!

We had a quick window of almost warm so we took kate to the beach.

She loved it!!!!!!!

Then it turned cold......
yes that is hail.

So we just stayed at the cabin and ate..... well- I might add!

One of the days we drove down to Logan to see my brother play at the tabernacle.

It was a long week and I've decided to check the weather before we plan another trip!

Memorial Day 2010

I like to take my kids to the cemeteries where my grandparents are buried. It gives me a chance to tell them what I remember about these wonderful people.

My Grandma Read was so fun. She hosted most our our big family get togethers.

Things that remind me of her........yummy rolls, candy and cookies (always on hand), fancy crinkle cut carrots, never a hair out of place, traveling to foreign countries, Greek statues & golden couches, plastic cups with our names on them, silly songs like "I'm a suit case" or "Gladys" (who slipped on a bar of soap), road trips to see cousins, dramatic readings.

My Grandpa Read was amazing! He spent his whole life trying to make other's lives better. (my lucky grandmother) Things that remind me of him.......gardening, cherry trees, produce in bushel baskets, bonfires, green cabins, motor homes, road trips with cousins, rubber wading boots, sen-sens (little black mints) the "energizer bunny", shredded wheat.

They both had nicknames for me that were exclusive to them. My Grandma called me "Jannie" and my Grandpa called me "Jan". I don't know why I thought that was so neat -but I loved it. My grandma would tell me how talented I was and I actually believed her. They had a lot of grand kids, but somehow managed to make me feel so special.

My Grandma Griffeth lived with me most of my childhood. My Grandpa past away before I was born. She was almost a second mother to me. She was so kind and soft spoken- We lived in the same house for 12 years and I can't remember her getting mad once. I'm sure she did, but she was so mild mannered that I never knew it. (My husband wonders why I didn't inherit that) I did, to some extent, inherit her frugality though. She was a penny pincher!!- but what a wonderful example that was for me. Things that remind me of her.......crocheting, homemade flash cards, (she was a school teacher) apple crisp, asparagus and brussel sprouts (my favorite veggies) clipping coupons and weekly grocery ads, my great-aunts(Hazel and Wonda), the temple, bright pink lipstick,Star Valley and rhubarb.

I loved hearing her sing the hymns in church. She had a quite a"unique" voice, but I love that I can still hear it in my head when I close my eyes and think of it.

At the end of the year the 4th graders have a big rendezvous where they spend the whole day doing fun mountain man activities.

Preschool Graduation

This is Carter's first day of Preschool........and this was his last.

I can't believe how fast this year has flown. He learned a lot this year, but if you asked him what his biggest accomplishment was he'd tell you "learning how to make a Lego Mario" (from youtube).

He put on quite a show at the graduation (lots of acrobatics) Yes, he is only one horizontal in this picture.

I took this picture three years ago over Memorial Day Weekend. I remember we went to the cabin and it was too cold to do anything. Too cold to play on the beach,too cold to boat, almost too cold to sleep. We had to build a fire to keep warm and wouldn't ya know it the chimney was clogged and the cabin filled with smoke. But look at the SMILES on their faces.

My Mother

-This is my wonderful Mother! She has so many gifts, but one of her greatest is teaching.

-She was born to be a teacher, even as a little girl playing school with her dolls, she knew that's what she was going to be.

-She is the most positive, energetic, optimistic person I know.

-When I was younger I remember everywhere we went- kids would come out of nowhere and hug my mom. I did have to share her with hundreds of other kids over the years, but she some how had enough time and love for all of us.

-She is retiring after 31 years of teaching. I know she will be missed, but I also know some grand kids that are so excited so have more of her!!

So..... we found ourselves on a Sunday night with no meal planned. Saturday ended up too crazy and I didn't get to the grocery store. I don't know why those Saturday Stake Conference meetings that start at 4pm always catch me off guard.

Anyways... we were rummaging through the food storage and nothing was sounding very good......UNTIL we came across the case of tuna. (I've never been a fan of tuna) but for some reason a tuna recipe that my mother made for me as kid popped into my head.

"Hey we could make CREAMED TUNA ON TOAST"! "YUCK!" is all I heard back (in unison). "No, really guys it's good, I loved it when I was a kid".

So..... with 5 skeptics breathing down my neck I looked up a recipe and made it. Guess what.....
THEY LOVED IT! (or at least pretended to.) :-)

Highlights of the week

The Planetarium was the next outing on Grandma's 6 months of fun list. We watched a 3D movie at the IMAX, I don't know what was more fun watching the movie or watching the kids watch the movie.

Caution: Be careful when walking on the moon-my cute little niece fell and broke her leg right after this picture was taken.

Kate has a new hobby-sucking on her toes. She is getting pretty good at it and it buys me 15 more mins a day that I don't have to entertain her.

Dave's birthday was the craziest day! The girls made him a yummy German pancake and we went out to a quick lunch. We had parent teacher conferences, activity days, Y.W . and bishopric meetings. Our sweet friends caught wind that he wasn't even gonna get a cake so at 9:00pm they brought one over.(they call him"Uncle Leo"). We are so blessed to have such great friends! And I am so blessed to have such a great husband! We love you!

January is turning out to be more crazy than December. We put a few things off that we usually do in December- like Bree's Birthday, my in-laws visit, Dave's work party, follow-up dr. appointments, etc... Wow this month has been sooooooo Crazy!

First off, my parents decided that instead of gifts this year they were going to take all of us some place fun every month (for six months)-by all of us I mean my brothers and their families too. I don't think they knew what they were getting into -but our first outing was a blast!!! By the way- I love this idea creating memories is much better than any material gift.

So we started at In-n-Out.....we had to see what all the hullabaloo was about.

I was actually impressed and the kids loved it. Carter loved the SHARKS. The older ones (and uncle Gary) loved petting the stingrays- they were drenched by the time they were done. My mom got us all season passes so we are headed back in March to see the Penguins.

Bree's Birthday Party

For Bree's birthday party we decided to do a Mall Scavenger hunt. We put them in teams and had them racing through the mall trying to find all kinds of items. Yes- it was a bit of work putting it together but well worth it- your oldest only turns 12 once right???

Then back to our house for Pizza and "Confessions of a Shopaholic".

I just have to mention this- a big highlight- They had tryouts for our school musical and out of the 200 or so who tried out......

Her sisters planned the event. (Bree always tells me she wants to be a party planner, so I let her take charge) The theme was Movie and a Makeover-I rented the movie & her sisters did the makeovers

they had Pizza and Ice Cream Sundees. Way easy and way fun!!!

I can't believe January is almost over- Here's hoping next month is less crazy...

10 meetings, 12 music lessons, 5 (very long) Dr. appointments, 3 X-ray appointments, 1 Ultrasound, 1 MRI, 1 scouting drive, 2 birthday partites, 1 ward temple night, 4 activity days, 3 play tryouts, 1 field trip, 1 work party, 1 math placement test, 1 missed wedding(dang),1 women's conference and at least 155 baby feedings.

That's just the stuff that made it on the Calendar.

Happy 10th Birthday to our beautiful Saydi!!!! This girl is so sweet and kind hearted. She is our peacemker(most of the time) and helps out a lot around here.

Her favorite B-day presents: Scrapbook stuff and a fashion design studio.

Every year we do candy houses with the neighbors- this year we did them on Saydi's Birthday We really weren't that excited for the birthday cake after all the candy that we ate. Next year we will space it out a little more.

~I am thankful for my wonderful husband who surprised me and put the lights on the Christmas tree this year. (and everywhere else)
~I am thankful for my fabulous children who- woke up early this morning, did their practicing, emptied the dishwasher, packed their own lunches, cleaned the kitchen after, didn't fight over anything, helped each other with their hair, and made it to family prayer all before heading off to school 10 mins early. (pinch me -am I dreaming?)
~I am thankful to live in a neighborhood full of the most amazing people, where I am a block away from 2 schools and church, 2 minutes from the gym and 5 minutes from shopping.
~I am thankful for my health, sure I'll deal with the issues of being old with a body that's given birth to five kids, I know it could be a lot worse.
~I am thankful to still have two wonderful parents alive and well.(esp after last year)
~I am thankful for the Gospel of Jesus Christ and for Joseph Smith and all those who helped restore it to the earth today. My life would be so different without all the blessings this Gospel brings!

5 is the age when we have our first "friend" party-- I have to admit I had know idea how to do a boy party. The 5 year old girl parties seemed easy- maybe because I am a girl, but this was uncharted territory, I had no idea what to expect.

We did a "Police theme" because he is really into the Police/Bad guy thing. And we had to get a little creative because (silly me) there is not a lot of "Police themed" ready made party supplies.

(note to self -check out party supplies before picking the theme)

We had a great group of boys, they were very well mannered, this could have gotten ugly with air guns and chocolate cup cakes. (note to self-choc cupcakes outside only)

The "Cars" cake that we turned into a sheriff cake.

Newborn Heaven

There must be opposition in all things.... right? I am in newborn Heaven and sleep deprived !@#$! I find myself longing for sleep, but not at the expense of her growing up. So-I'll deal with the constant headaches and exhaustion- if she'll just stay little. I can't believe she'll be 4 weeks tomorrow, probably because it feels like one long day- with lots of little naps. My life has come to a screeching halt. I spend hours in the rocking chair just gazing at her sweet little face while ignoring all the house work that isn't getting done. Oh how I know this will not last, and life will speed up again. I'm sure someday my house will recover, but until then....

When she decided to come, she came QUICK!
What a relief!!!

I am so glad I got to experience natural childbirth. I could not have done it without all my cheerleaders- First Dave who is my strength! He gave me a blessing and I couldn't help but feel like everything was going to be just fine. Cousin Amy, who convinced me that I could do this in the first place. (you were so right about everything!) My sis/neighbor Annie, who held my hand the whole way. ( You made me feel tougher than I really am!) And all of my friends who shared their "going natural" experiences -you are all my heroes.

My Due Date has come and gone!

I feel bad complaining because I could of had it -(yes, we still don't know the sex) by now. Yep- could have been induced two weeks ago. I have never been this pregnant before and for some reason I have this strong desire to do it the old fashion way.(well sort of) On some level (I guess) I want to know a little what my sweet grandmothers had to go through. (No ultrasound or Pitocin) Anyone who knows me, knows I am not a patient person. I have always peeked to see what the sex is and I have them hook up the pit A.S.A.P. I have never gone into Labor, or felt a painful contraction in my life.

I guess knowing this is my last ... I don't want to feel like I missed something. One day when one of my daughter's ask me --what does "going into labor" feel like? (hopefully-though it's not looking good) I will have experienced it. (Silly I know)

The things that are driving me crazy right now are:

-Because of the pre-term labor scares -I've been told this baby could come "any day now" for TWO MONTHS

-My body has been taunting me with hrs and hrs of pretty intense contractions only to stop when I start to take them seriously.

-I have one shirt that fits over my stomach- no bottoms- everything I have feels like it is cutting me in half.

-I have tried everything (except Castor oil) to induce Labor and NOTHING WORKS!

-It is so hard to plan things right now because you just never know if you're going to be around. (And my sweets friends and family who are trying to plan around this too have got to be about done.) Sorry guys

-did I mention ...IT'S SEPTEMBER.

-It has been brought to my attention (many times) that the average gestation period is 41 and 1/7th weeks- (just what every pregnant woman wants to hear)

-NESTING ha ...just to get it un-nested.

O.K. I'll stop. I know this is just a short time and when it's over -it's over. I'm sure there is a reason this kid has not come out yet -and when it's ready we will find someway to get it here. I've heard you shouldn't have expectations when it comes to childbirth -because it never goes the way you expect. I just need to to be patient and roll with it and somehow enjoy the emotional roller coaster ride.

Summer is coming to an end -at least for me- I'm pooped! We have packed in a lot over the last couple weeks and since this is my scrapbook- here are the Pictures. Be warned it's a lot.

First off- I am so happy softball season is over! It's fun to watch Dave play- but I don't know if it's worth 2 months of date night.

The Pioneer Day 10K is a tradition, but I had to watch this year. I was one minute late and missed him cross the finish line. He was faster than I thought.

Ever since I can remember we have always had a bonfire on the 24th of July. It is another family tradition -we sing crazy songs and do smores. This year we had a slide show of the old folks who started this tradition long before my generation came along.

Oquirrh Mt Temple Open House

We took the kids and my Mom and Sister-in-law to the Oquirrh Mt. Temple open house. (Yes- I got to use the elevators, my sister-in-law is trying to go into labor, so she used the stairs.) I wasn't sure how the kids were going to feel about it - I hoped we hadn't built it up too much in their little minds.

They loved it.

The baptismal font was a favorite. Carter asked if he could get his floaties and go swimming. And when Bree told him "No, that's where they do baptisms for the dead". My cute nephew then said, " So they put dead bodies in there?" Everybody around us laughed.

After -we hit the ice cream joint-- it was a HOT day!

What a fun day! I love the temple and the blessings it brings to my life. I'm so glad I can share this with my whole family.

Bed Rest at Bear Lake

OK -so our bags were packed and we were on our way, I just had to go to a dr. appointment before we headed out for our week at Bear Lake. Well- 4 hours later I was sent home forbidden to go anywhere. (They said I was in pre-term Labor - they sent me home with some drugs and told me to stay in bed. HA) My family was so good about it, but after a couple days of being in bed and nothing happening I decided we should go anyway. (Don't tell my Dr.) I can do nothing at Bear Lake much easier than at home.

I love this boat!!! This is the very same boat that I rode on as a child, my dad completely restored it. Now my kids can experience that same thrill of sitting on the bow speeding through the water just like your flying. (way more thrilling than portrayed in the movie Titanic)"Don't worry Mom, we are not going out very far".

Then the wind came... Dave had to go rescue them -they were hysterical by the time he got to them. Good lesson learned.

It's always fun to catch-up with the Eyre's. We had a little family reunion with those of us who share that deep love for bear lake. It was fun to see cousins that I haven't seen in years.

I don't know how I feel about the "Stingray" since it has been outlawed for safety reasons, but the kids love it. It's a fun stable ride..... until the wind comes up and then it can take you 20 feet in the air just like that.

Every year he goes out a little deeper.
The girls had lots of Jam sessions . They wrote a ton of silly songs- watch for the album soon. It will blow "smelly cat" out of the water.Everybody loves the CANDY BAR game.So, I'm so glad we decided to go anyway. Now -I just have to explain the suntan to my Dr. Hee hee.

Bear Lake

Last week I took the kids to Bear Lake, Dave stayed behind to work and run his race. My parents are remodeling one of their cabins, so we roughed it (so to speak). We had bedrooms and bathrooms but that was about it. It is so nice to get away without TV, Internet, video games, and the constantly ringing phone. The kids were so helpful and didn't whine about the less than fabulous weather. We did puzzles, played lots of games, and Bree and Saydi both finished their "Work and the Glory" books.

It seems like my kids take turns going through phases. Some good phases, some not so good. I just have to say that Saydi has had a good year. She has been so helpful through all the craziness.

This kid has always been the quiet one, and unlike her siblings, stays out of the spotlight. She is so talented- but not all those talents are easily noticed. This year she has been playing the piano and working on her gymnastics skills. She also draws very well and has been fixing her own hair all year.(I think she just got tired of me not knowing how to do hair) I love that she naturally thinks of others first and can see a need usually before anyone else.

She definitely makes our house run smoother and we love her for that!!

Last weekend we took our kids to This is the Place Heritage Park.

There was a lot more to do there than I thought. I was pleasantly surprised. My kids enjoyed it and so did Dave and I.The kids made Candles and Snakes

The Baby farm animals were a hit.

The kids got to do laundry the old fashion way
The mini train was another a hit!10 children lived in this one room cabin- my kids couldn't believe itMy kids came home with a greater appreciation for what they have.
I highly recommend this Park!

Bree's Sabbatical

I am one of those people who tried violin and piano lessons but didn't take it very seriously. And yes not a day goes by that I don't wish that I had stuck with it longer. So- I am a mother who has a hard time letting my kids quit things. I know that everyone has different gifts, but being able to conquer something that is hard is something that can build self-esteem. Now, along with that I also feel it's important to find something for each child that they feel good at-- to counter-act the frustration of the hard thing they are trying to conquer.

So, when Bree decided to take a sabbatical from violin lessons I had very mixed feelings about it. She has been showing signs of burn out in all areas and we knew she needed something different. So trying to put aside everything we have invested in this particular hobby, we let her make the decision. Ugh. I think she's enjoying the break. She has started taking piano lessons for fun. And she's also started doing quite a bit of babysitting. (She has never been one to just do nothing.) We just hope that we are making the right decision as parents.

It's not that she's given the violin up completely. She still plays with a trio once a week. They call themselves the "Classical Chicks" and recently performed at a music festival at WSU. (It's been so fun for her to play her violin with others her own age.)

She also tried out for the city's Talent Show. She made the finalist list, but the actual talent show is part of the "Concert Series" at the amphitheater and isn't until June.

We abosolutly love being the parents of this girl but, It's so hard to know when to push and when to back-off. Maybe by the time #5 is at this stage we"ll be better at this. (But probably not, they are all so different.)

Egg Hunts in the RAIN!

The traditional egg hunt at Grandma's was wet, but the only ones bothered by that were the grown-ups. The kids had a ball. And yes, thanks to grandma they all ended up with their own silly puddy. yippy!!!

My favorite Easter tradition is making chocolate covered marshmallow eggs with my Mom. We made about 50 this year and I think I ate 30. But since I'm eating for two... we each got 15 (that sounds better)

Girls Night Out!

Last night I got to go out to the Olive Garden with my dear friends. We used to be neighbors, but now we've scattered in different areas. We try to get together at least three times a year, and it's something I really look forward to. I could easily write a page on each of these girls- they are so talented and amazing.(but I'll spare them) I love hearing about their lives, even if it does make me feel like the boring one of group. I hope that 50 years from now we will still be getting together for girls nights-that is- assuming they let me out of the "old folk home".

Back to Life!

I find my last post ironic. I can't say that I loved the last 3 months, but I am loving that they are behind me, and I am where I am now.
I don't remember anything about Christmas, or the 4 family birthdays that past by--but I do know life does go on..... and next year has to be better. (right?) I know we all have our turn to be stretched to the point where we think we are going to break. This is when we experience growth. I just hope for a break between those growth spurts.

Now- I must say, I am so blown away at the kindness and inspiration of others. We had so many meals brought to us (with and without the relief society involved). Some nights two meals would show up. (from people that make me wonder "How do they have time?") My favorite was getting a random call by someone who had just made too much for their family to eat and if they could bring some over it would help them out. I have so much to learn from these people.

Next- I have to say I am married to SUPERMAN! Don't get me wrong he can pull off a pretty convincing Clark Kent, but when "Our Metropolis" is in trouble- he is super human!! He has been both Mom and Dad...cooking, cleaning, grocery shopping, school spotlights, science fair projects, book reports, daily homework, practicing, & lessons, while clocking in 40 hrs a week of engineering, and his bishopric meetings. (unbelievable) Now that I'm feeling better... I see more Clark, but I don't mind-- he will always be superman to me! Honey- if you ever read this. I LOVE YOU!

It is so good to be feeling better, and I know my Mom echos that. She has made a remarkable recovery and I am so thankful to still have her in my life. Thank you everyone for your fasting and prayers on her behalf. It worked!!!!!

Here's hoping the next 3 months are more lovable!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Well Done Thy Good and Faithful Servant

Elder Wirthlin has been a favorite of mine for a while now. I will miss his cute, funny personality, but he has indeed earned his rest from this mortal life. His last conference talked "Come What May, and Love It" was so good and just what I needed this year. One sentence from that talk stuck out and rings in my head at least once a day.

"If we approach adversities wisely, our hardest times can be times of greatest growth, which in turn can lead toward times of greatest happiness."

I love that he played football (even if it was for the U) and loved sports. He was so down to earth. He reminds me so much of my grandpa who also lived to see a busy age of 91. What great examples these men are. He will be missed, but I smile when I think of where he is now.

Since I voted on Halloween,I'll post my Halloween pictures on voting day. Another easy Halloween. (no sewing this year)

This is the last time I sewed costumes. I think I got it all out of my system that year. ha ha

My favorite "trick or treater" this year was the cutest little bo peep I've ever seen.

Our Fall Break

We have an on going argument in our family on whether it takes money to have fun. Oh we know you don't need money to have fun, but we all take turns believing it. Last January we'd planned to do Disneyland this week for fall break.....yada yada yada.... we are in Utah this week. Anyways Dave (bless his heart) was determined to show us that you can have a good time without spending money. So we took the kids the Logan for the day. (I think he was inspired by how poor we were in college.) We've never takin our kids back to Utah State so at least it was new for them. They loved climbing the stairs at Old Main Hill and running as fast as they could back down. They also climbed on all the fountains and statues. Free Fun! We did stop for Aggie ice cream which I reminded him costs money, but Dave is a huge ice cream fan and it was a good deal. I wasn't going to argue with that.

Carter crashed half way down, it's steeper then it looks.

On the way home we stopped and visited Uncle Greg and Aunt Erin and had some dinner. Then we stopped in Paradise where my cousin lives and ended up going to a farm for a Halloweenie Roast. This cute Family opens up their farm for people to come visit. They take you on a ride pulled by a tractor (drivin by a cute little grandma) to tour tons of Halloween scenes. (8 years in the making) They also had barrel rides for the little kids and a haunted barn for the older ones. The kids loved it! And guess what IT WAS FREE!!! They do it cause they think that's what Grandpa would want. (the grandpa who handed down the farm) That was perfect for Dave's crusade for free fun.
So somehow we managed to have a lot of fun on a little money. Side note- Yes I did buy Utah State t's but they were only 5 bucks!

P.S. I have nothing against Disneyland, fun resorts, boats, ATV's, cruises, or anything else that expensive fun. ha ha

Mommy & Bree Date

Tonight Bree and I went to a Jenny Oaks Baker concert. We just love her! We have a few of her Cd's but had never seen her live. She is AWESOME and so fun to watch. She played with the Utah Youth Symphony which I am also very impressed with. Kurt Bestor was there too. He's always fun to hear from. After the concert we got to meet her and she was so sweet! I 'm so happy that Bree has someone like her for a role model. Oh ya and we also literally bumped into her Dad three times tonight... so on our way out we asked for a photo. We think he's pretty cool too.

O.K. so I don't have an extra thousand bucks right now, but can you put a price on your sanity anyway? I have spent way more time in the bathroom than any sane person should. I have tried everything potty parties, potty presents, hours in the bathroom(he can hold it forever), putting Cheerios in the potty to pee on, taking away his computer games that he loves, and yes no birthday party.( I have a month and a half to dig my way out of that hole). My favorite thing right now is my little green machine(carpet cleaner). I've heard that boys are harder but really this much? Oh yeah I'm also trying to teach myself photo shop right now which is equally as frustrating. Somethings gotta give. I'm sure this is all to teach me patience and long suffering. And I know there are way worse things (real tragedies) but I just had to vent!! I'll try to be more positive next time!

There is nothing like getting your visiting teaching done the first part of the month. I'm not bragging cause it's rare, but I just feel like I can handle everything else so much better when that is checked off my list. I love visiting teaching it is so fun to visit with these cute ladies, and I know I get more from them than I bring. What a blessing!
